Sapphire is the birthstone for September. It is a variety of corundum like ruby.
Any color of corundum except red is called “sapphire,” although cornflower blue is the

most popular and sought-after sapphire color. The name “sapphire” alone refers to the blue

variety. All other colors have the color name added to the stone, as in “orange sapphire,”
“pink sapphire”, “yellow sapphire”etc. Most of sapphires these days are heated but they

are acceptable because their colors are better and more durable.

The cool blue sapphire marks the season’s shift from summer to autumn.

To those born in the transition month of September, it relaxes and clears the mind. It also
protects its owner from fraud, envy and ill health. Sapphire symbolizes sincerity and

faithfulness and is thus considered an excellent choice for an engagement ring.

October’s birthstone is Opal. It comes in both black and white varieties, with

black being the most rare. It is the only gemstone that is popular for its mixed colors in one

stone. The shifting colors seen in opal, called “fire”. We often find bi-color or tri-color opals.
Like other non-transparent stones, it is usually cut into a smooth, rounded, polished dome

called a cabochon.

The complex and colorful opal ensures fidelity and confidence for people
born in October, in addition to sharpening the mind and emotions. Legend says that it is

especially good for the eyes. Tourmaline is considered an alternative to opal as the

Birthstone for October.
